Overview A lot of emphasis of the PE teaching and learning is on advancing the pupils physically from whatever ability they arrive at school with. Every child needs to be fit, active and healthy in order to carry out everyday tasks and to work to the best of their ability. Our extensive extra-curricular programme offers the students a chance to participate further if they so wish but also to excel in competitive situations both in intra and inter school competitions. Year 9 Year 9 Core PE – Students have 2 x 50 minute lessons per week following the new National Curriculum PE. They have both indoor and outdoor lessons every week and follow a rotation of activities throughout the year. Normally, they experience up to 12 sports in year 9 just in core PE lessons. Year 10 & 11 Core PE Year 10/11 Core PE – Students have a 1 x 100 minute lesson once a week. Again they do a range of sports and either, extend their previous knowledge and performance or try new sports that have not be taught in Key Stage 3. More emphasis is placed on Leadership skills and the importance of a lifelong and active lifestyle. Year 10 & 11 Accredited PE At Key Stage 4, students opt for a ‘Sport’ option if they so wish to. This is an additional 3 lessons per week in which they follow the Edexcel BTec First Certificate in Sport or AQA GCSE PE. Both courses are accredited pathways into post 16 Further Education. Both courses have a theory and practical element. Year 12 & 13 At Key Stage 5, students opt for either Edexcel BTec National Certificate in Sport or the OCR A Level PE as part of their 6th Form studies. There is a lot more emphasis on the theory of sport, especially at A Level, but both courses have practical assessments. Extra Curricular Sport at South Bromsgrove is highly regarded by students, staff, parents and local governing bodies. Our record of participation and completion of fixtures is exemplary. We offer the students as much as we can physically offer in regards to leagues, tournaments, competitions and festivals. Over the recent years we have had teams or clubs in athletics, basketball, badminton, cheerleading, cricket, cross-country, football, golf, hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, softball, tennis and we will endeavour to expand that list if the interest arises. We are very successful in a lot of sports and have won trophies in local, district and county competitions.
