Year 10 & 11 Chemistry GCSE is taught over two years in Years 10 and 11, comprising of a single and a double lesson. Practical work is incorporated into lessons to develop learning and reinforce understanding of the topics covered. The course is supported by textbooks, revision guides and electronic resources. Topics covered in GCSE Chemistry include the diverse world of organic chemistry, extraction and purification of metals and other essential industrial processes and their impact on the environment. The additional units which are not covered in Additional Science provide some challenging quantitative chemistry that provides an excellent introduction to Advanced level work. In addition, these units include cutting edge contexts, such as hydrogen fuel cells and nanochemistry. Year 12 & 13 Chemistry is taught at AS and A2 Level. It is important for students who wish to follow the course to have a grade B in either Chemistry or Science and Additional Science. It is also important to have reasonable maths skills. Chemistry provides an insight into the world around us and how things work. The theoretical concepts are learnt and can then be used to understand unfamiliar industrial concepts and applications. Practical work is undertaken in the laboratory to support understanding and develop analytical skills. The course is supported by ‘Kerboodle’ VLE and resources on the school’s shared drive.
