Year 10 & 11 Physics is taught over two years in Years 10 and 11. Students will have one double lesson per week and a single lesson. Practical work is carried out regularly to reinforce learning, and to provide students with the opportunity to deepen their understanding. The course is supported by textbooks, revision guides and the school’s ‘Shared’ network area. Students are given the opportunity to take part in trips to enhance their learning experience, including the annual Alton Towers educational excursion. Topics covered in GCSE Physics include Energy, Forces and Motion, Radioactivity and Digital Systems. Environmental awareness is a key theme of the course and Physics enables students to understand ‘Green’ issues and develop solutions to the biggest problems facing the planet. If you want to improve the world around you, then GCSE Physics is the ideal first step. Year 12 & 13 Physics is taught at AS and A2 level. Students are expected to gain at least a B grade in Science and Additional Science, or in Physics. Students need to be able to cope with the mathematical side of the subject. At AS, they must be able to rearrange equations and at A2, they must be able to handle logs and exponential functions. Physics provides a gateway into many different careers, as it develops skills which are highly prized by employers. Students will develop an understanding of fundamental concepts and theories and will be able to apply them successfully in order to solve problems. The course is supported by textbooks, revision guides and the ‘Kerboodle’ VLE. Practical work is used to reinforce learning and stimulate interest in this dynamic subject.
