Art & Design

Year 9

In art, students will explore visual, tactile, and other sensory experiences to communicate ideas and meanings. Students will explore and experiment with traditional and new media to develop their confidence, competence, imagination and above all, creativity. They will learn to appreciate and value the work of other artists and designers, reflecting on their own work and other people’s work. Creativity is a key concept that underpins the study of art and design at key stage 3 and we will encourage this originality through the development of personal, purposeful work. Students will also be encouraged to explore the work of other cultures and use these characteristics to inform their creating and making.

Year 10 & 11

This GCSE course provides students with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating opportunities to explore their interests in art and design in ways that are personally relevant and truly developmental in nature. The requirements of the specification allow for the study of art and design in both breadth and depth. It provides progression from Key Stage 3, a strong and appropriate foundation for further progression to art and design related courses such as GCE, BTEC and Creative and Media Diplomas and enhanced vocational and career pathways. Students will undertake a portfolio of work during year 10 and 11 which contributes 60% of the final grade and consists of two major projects, with the remaining 40% being an externally set task which concludes in a 10 hour final exam.

Year 12 & 13

The production of worthwhile artwork in an atmosphere of creativity can be extremely rewarding and on completion of this course most students look back and admit it was FUN. The multi-disciplinary nature of this course allows the students to demonstrate their abilities over a wide range of areas within the subject. The AS award comprises two compulsory assessment units. Unit 1 is coursework and Unit 2 is an externally-set assignment . The A2 award also comprises two compulsory assessment units.  Unit 3 is coursework and Unit 4 is an externally-set assignment. The A2 assessment units build on the AS, allowing for greater depth of study. Flair and creativity is encouraged and students can pursue their own individual style.
