Music has a high profile at South thanks to our many events, ensembles and activities and we are a friendly and industrious department.
Facilities and Curriculum
Our facilities include a very large classroom (that doubles up as a rehearsal space) which houses 4 practice rooms, 17 PCs running Sibelius 6 and Magix Music Maker software, and a keyboard lab; and a smaller classroom (with a further 2 practice rooms) for music theory lessons. We also have a studio with digital mixing desk and PCs running Cubase 5.
Our key stage 3 students are currently able to develop performance skills on keyboard, ukulele, xylophone and drums. We are looking forward to setting up ‘Jam Hubs’ to give students the opportunity to play bass, electric guitar and drums in small groups. Year 9 students enjoy studying Musicology, Film Music, Popular Music and Taiko drumming through a range of Performing, Listening and Composition-based activities.
We offer Music at GCSE and A Level, as well as A Level Music Technology, and follow the Edexcel syllabus for all three qualifications. Music students focus on performance, composition and listening. They develop listening, theory and analysis skills and apply them to a range of set works across different musical genres and periods. They also create their own compositions and are given access to Noteflight (web-based notation software) for use in school and at home. Those studying Music Tech develop production techniques such as recording, sequencing and arranging, as well as studying the development of popular music.
Extra-Curricular Groups and Events
We pride ourselves on offering a wealth of extra-curricular opportunities for a range of musical abilities, and encourage all students to get involved. Larger ensembles include the Orchestra, Facebox (Rock Choir) and Chamber Choir (SATB). We also run a number of smaller ensembles for more advanced musicians, including Chamber Orchestra (Grade 5 and above), Niknuf (Sax Quartet) and South Sisters (audition only female vocal group). We even have a staff choir so the teachers can get involved too!
We present many events and concerts across the school year. Highlights include The Link Concert with our friends from Chadsgrove School; iCONs – our singing competition; the Christmas Concert; Orchestra workshops in our feeder middle schools; South Rocks; and the annual music tour (Italy 2011, Germany 2012, Austria 2013, Poland 2014, Paris 2015). We also regularly hold smaller events such as Lunch time or Rush Hour Concerts to give our musicians (and sometimes those from our feeder schools) the opportunity to perform solo or small ensemble items.
