The National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) is widely recognised as the  qualification of choice for anyone aspiring to be a Headteacher.

Shaped with school leaders and underpinned by some of the best research and thinking internationally, the course will challenge and develop talented leaders who can deliver educational excellence, drive school improvement priorities and offer high quality leadership skills.

Training with us

South Bromsgrove Teaching School offers NPQH qualifications for Senior Leaders who would like to take the next steps in their career development.  Our programme is delivered in partnership with Worcestershire Global Leadership Academy (WGLA) and training sessions may be situated in any one of the partnership schools.

Our facilitators for the essential and elective modules are outstanding Head Teachers who have undergone training specifically for this purpose.  Materials are delivered in an engaging and interactive manner and we are very keen to develop a cohort identity which allows candidates to support each other’s learning journey.

Who is this qualification for?

Candidates should be highly motivated to become a headteacher, no more than 12–18 months from applying for headship posts and have the full support of their headteacher or line manager. Candidates must have the full support and endorsement of their headteacher, line manager or sponsor.

Course Modules

NPQH modules contain a blend of work-based, online, reflective and facilitated learning. The balance of each module will vary, however typically at least half of the module activity will be work-based.

To achieve the National Professional Qualification for Headship you will need to successfully complete three essential modules, built from outstanding practice.  The course comprises an interview with serving Head Teachers to discuss your motivation and journey to headship, a two day residential training session designed to allow you to reflect on your learning within supportive environment and a final one-day face-to-face training session.

During your NPQH you will complete one placement at a contrasting school and two school improvement projects.

  1. Leading a whole-school change programme (4,000 words)
  2. Designing an action plan to meet my placement school’s resourcing and capability needs (2,500 words)
